EVERY CHAIR
(Visual Studies Workshop)
by Luke Strosnider

By photographing each and every chair at the Visual Studies Workshop in Rochester, New York, my goal was to intensify my own specific experience of membership in the Workshop community, to reveal photography's power to give personality to inanimate objects, and to consider the medium's role as a substitute for lived events.

The project is also an exploration the long and varied history of an institution. For over 30 years, the Visual Studies Workshop has been a non-profit media arts center and graduate school and has hosted numerous exhibtions, artists-in-residence, lectures, and classes. What does this archive say about this unique institution and the varied experiences of those who've come to know it?

I've begun design of an artists book of this project which will contain all 521 photographs.
